Deep down inside you may have an idea for a story so compelling that you want to write a script about it. That is how the creative process get started and that script can be for television, theater, or the movies. What you need to appreciate is that expert script writing help is something that is a special class of authorship. Here are a few tips you should consider as you go down the creative road.

Tips on Script Writing

1. You Are Not Writing a Novel. It is a common trap for writers to fall into, but script writing is not the same as writing a book of fiction. Dialogue is critically important. At the same time plot development is critical. You do not have the luxury of hundreds of pages, either.

2. Keep in Mind the Time. One page of a script is equivalent to one minute of time in a movie. You should be looking at between 100 and 120 pages for a movie script. If you are writing a script for theater, you have to worry about the time as well. People are willing to sit for four hours of Hamlet because the author was William Shakespeare. That seems to be the only exception.

3. There Is a Proper Format for Scriptwriting. This means certain margins, the proper font, and breaks in the right places. You also have to be writing according to the style of the genre of your story (e.g. Romance, Thriller, Comedy, etc.). Failure to do that causes unnecessary confusion.

4. Follow a Writing Discipline. You should work from an outline as you go about writing the script. The premise is the idea that drives the entire scripted story. Make sure that your writing keeps the premise in mind.

5. Develop Your Characters and Your Plot. These drive the script and should be carefully thought out. If you need to change motivations of characters to better tell the story do not hesitate to do that.

6. Never Be Afraid to Edit. Expect to do several revisions of your script. That is just part of the process and every scriptwriter has to do that. Sometimes a story has to be changed a little bit or some plot points embellished. It is all part of creating a good finished product.

7. Work on the Scenes. Every scene has dialogue and action. Make certain that there is a good flow between the scenes and that they stay connected to the overall plot.

8. The Dialogue Is Critical. The story is coming from the mouth of the actors and the words have to support the plot. Here is where a lot of script writers have some serious problems. You cannot write dialogue as if it were part of a book. The words have to be commonly understood by the audience or you will risk losing their attention.

9. Edit Even More. When you are finished with the first draft back and take a very serious look at it. Be willing to make changes for the sake of the story. Always remember that the script has to be marketable and if it cannot sell you have wasted your time.

10. Have Others Review Your Work. Have others take a look at what you have and seek their honest advice. Be willing to accept criticism because it is constructive. The comments of others can help you produce an even better final work.
